The Max Paul Memorial Dodgeball Tournament is the tournament that laid the foundation for the dodgeball empire created by Dallas Morrow and Justin Kohler. Although it wasn't developed under the official title of Grand Slam Dodgeball, it still holds a special in our hearts. Conceived in the library of Waterloo High School, the Max Paul Memorial Dodgeball Tournament was quite literally built from the ground up. It sprouted from Justin's off-the-wall dream of creating the best dodgeball tournament ever seen in Monroe County. Once Dallas was on board, the two spent every study hall formulating how to make this dream a reality. They were venturing into uncharted territory, so every detail had to be covered. Court dimensions, team sizes, prices, rules, and tournament structure all had to be established. It was a meticulous process, but, nevertheless, the task was accomplished. A date of Saturday, February 10th was settled upon, and at that point it was just a matter of getting people there. Being in high school made recruiting teams easy; ten were signed up within just a few days of advertising. It was looking to be one of the greatest nights of high school, but then tragedy struck. On Tuesday, February 6th, one of Dallas' best friends, Max Paul, passed away. Dallas and Justin then made a decision to dedicate the tournament in memory of Max. Despite this decision, emotional distress almost caused Dallas to cancel the tournament at the last minute, but many of his friends convinced him that the tournament would help people; and it did. The turnout was incredible, with around seventy-five people in attendance. Such success was the reason Grand Slam Dodgeball was able to form and grow into what it has become today.
